  • Biotin is often recommended as a dietary supplement for strengthening hair and helping hair loss.

  • Biotin is consumed in many of the foods that we eat on a daily basis, including eggs, spinach, milk and milk products, beef and chicken.  Thus, is it necessary to add biotin as a supplement and moreover, is there evidence to show that biotin is an effective treatment?

  • Hair loss can be caused by many factors and treatment with biotin supplementation can cause a delay in the appropriate treatment of the true underlying condition.

  • Therefore, a patient history and examination must be performed with the risk factors for biotin deficiency in mind to determine the appropriate course of action.

  • Thiamine, also known as Vitamin B1 plays a vital role in brain metabolism.  It helps your body turn food into energy.  Thiamine is a water-soluble vitamin, which means that the body only stores small quantities of it.  Therefore, it is important to include it regularly in your diet.  It is found in the foods that you eat, such as, beef, fish, black beans, whole grains and dairy products.  It is also added to foods such as breakfast cereals and white rice.   You can find it as well as an individual supplement and in multivitamins.

  • Thiamine deficiency can be found in patients both pre- and post-bariatric surgery.  Symptoms of low thiamine levels include nerve damage that results in pain and numbness in your hands, feet and different areas of the body.  Other symptoms can include burning feet, weakness and a condition known as Wernicke encephalopathy.

  • A low thiamine level before your gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery can become serious afterwards.  This is due to increased demands for thiamine from the weight loss surgery, rapid weight loss, and the loss of absorptive area in the body.

  • Recommendations for treatment vary, but usually range between 20 and 100 mg per day.

  • Patients of bariatric surgery are at a higher risk for many vitamin and mineral deficiencies hence follow-up visits are very important!

  •   The side effects of a thiamine deficiency if left untreated could possibly become permanent.
